3A- Your Entrepreneurship Story

I was fortunate enough to have been exposed to entrepreneurship at a young age because of my parents. My dad used to be a banker in Colombia but we had to move to the US and he was left without a job. He started considering starting a business but he didn't know which industry he wanted to go in at first. He ended up getting his real estate license with my mom and after a few successful years, they were able to open up their own real estate firm. It was at this point that my dad wanted to test his abilities as an entrepreneur. My uncle proposed the idea of starting up a business in the car insurance industry with him and my dad was all for it. My dad was so excited but soon reality would hit him. After three years of not being able to generate enough revenue, they had to shut down. This was a learning experience for my dad because he used what he learned from operating an unsuccessful business to be able to start up another business in the oil services industry in Colombia a few years later. I learned a great deal about entrepreneurship from seeing my dad's success and failure. One of the lessons I got from it is that it's always better to try then to not try at all because you can always learn from your mistakes.

I chose to take ENT3003 because I wanted to take a business elective and this one fit my schedule perfectly. I've also always been interested in the topic and I thought it would be beneficial to learn different entrepreneurial skills. By the end of the semester, I hope to have learned the fundamentals of what it takes for a successful start up and how I can incorporate entrepreneurial skills in other aspects of my life.

  1. Hi Felipe,
I went through similar experiences with seeing my parents both succeed and fail at businesses they had created. I think it's great that your dad was able to take what he learned from a previous unsuccessful business and use the new knowledge to open a new successful one. Maybe he can share with you what he learned that helped him to fix his mistakes so you can be better prepared for your future career.

  2. Hi Felipe, I loved your entrepreneurship story, and it reminds me a lot of my life. My dad has also tried to start up new businesses (both successes and failures) and through this he has learned how to become successful. Your story is perfect for this assignment and gives you great background knowledge. You could also talk to your dad about his experiences and he would be a great person for you to go to if you need advice in the future. I took this class for similar reasons, and am excited to be able to have a thorough understanding of entrepreneurship.

  3. Hi Felipe,
I really liked how you shared a personal story about the entrepreneurial experiences that your dad and uncle went through. It is great to discuss personal stories of successes, but it's equally as essential to discuss stories of failure because these are what we learn from the most. It is fantastic that he took the lessons that he learned from the insurance company and applied it to his new company in oil because it helped him become a successful entrepreneur. This story is amazing for this assignment because it gives insight into what real entrepreneurs have to go though. Overall, great post Felipe!

  4. Hi Felipe,
I really enjoyed reading your post. To see how much your dad went through in order just so he can follow his passion is very humbling because it shows that even though you are chasing your dreams does not mean you will get it first. In certain cases, failure the first time is usually certain but that shouldn't mean you should quit and it was nice to read that your dad did the opposite and just learned from the mistakes that he did he first time and ended up trying again. I do believe that you will get what you want out of this class. Great post!
